Rosie Kinsella - About Me

My name is Rosie Kinsella, I'm 18 years old and I study Fashion Journalism at Southampton Solent University. Prior to my new University journey, I studied Multi Media Journalism at college, and I've always had a deep interest in the writing aspect of journalism which is what I focus most of my time on. However, I do enjoy Marketing and Photography.

What drove me to pick this course at Solent is the fact that I have always had a love for writing, and with a passion for fashion too the combination of the two helped me make my decision to study Fashion Journalism. I feel as though I am quite old school about the subject, I like the idea of ordinary column/feature/article writing - I'm not a huge fan of blogging and digital media with Journalism.

I like this course because of the variety in units we get to learn, the facilities are excellent, the library being a perfect example. I also am excited for second year units and the way we get to choose 3 main subjects to focus on studying.

Since being on this course, I have enjoyed learning new knowledge from lecturers that are/have been in the industry, I have learnt new techniques that improve my writing and I've have been taught about the history of Fashion and all aspects of it.

However, so far I feel as though I have more negative criticisms than positive. This is due to the lack of feedback I have received on my work, which therefor leave me not knowing whether my writing is of a good standard. I do not enjoy the majority of practical work, I chose this course because I love to write and I'm good at it, some of the units on the course are things I don't really want to spend my time doing. I also personally dislike the way that this course sometimes focuses a lot on blogging, my aim is to not be a blogger - I want to be a writer that has her work published within print magazines, not online posts.

I have had some experience within the industry. I was an online fashion and beauty blogger for an online magazine called 'Charee' for about 5 months. I also had some work experience at the NHS in their media department where I worked for 2 weeks on a campaign called 'ChooseWell' where we designed marketing strategies to promote the campaign. I also wrote a draft article about the campaign for The Times newspaper.

My overall ambition is to be a writer for a Fashion Magazine, ideally Vogue or Glamour as they are two magazines that have been a part of my life for a long time, and I would love to write for them. Ideally I would like to write columns on purely Fashion, however I also am interested in maybe being a Beauty writer and writing reviews and recommendations on products which is also a big part of Vogue and Glamour.
